Color Kinetics LED light systems and technology has been installed on the British
Airways London Eye. World Travel Awards named the London Eye, which is the world’s
tallest observation wheel, the “World’s Leading Attraction.”
The London Eye is the latest high-profile tourist attraction to
undergo a complete lighting overhaul with Color Kinetics’ lighting technology.
Reportedly more than 10,000 people visit the London Eye on the South Bank of
River Thames each day. The fluorescent tubes that previously lit the wheel proved
too costly to maintain and required time consuming manual installation of gels
to produce colored light for special events.
For this reason, Color Kinetics was approached to replace this system with
an LED-based alternative. Architectural Lighting Ltd. and Lighting Technology
Projects supplied, installed, and programmed Approximately 640 ColorCast 14
units were supplied, installed and programmed by UK-based Architainment Lighting
Ltd. and Lighting Technology Projects. According to Color Kinetics, each unit
may be individually programmed to generate millions of colors that are seamlessly
produced by Chromacore technology, and unlike the colored gels, it does not
require the use of manual labor. This technology gives the London Eye the ability
to display precise colors for corporate clients and special occasions cost effectively,
while predominantly displaying white light.
