Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Quito thanked Joe Biden for his “support and recognition” during a call on Wednesday.

“Today # 8junio I spoke with President Joe Biden @POTUS, who reaffirmed his support for the Venezuelan people’s struggle to restore democracy and achieve free and fair elections. I appreciate your recognition and support for Venezuela’s interim government,” Quito wrote on his Twitter account.

“We thank President Biden POTUS for supporting the people who are fighting for democracy without calling for dictators. Summit. Regional governments must be on the side of the people and use all democratic tools to fight authoritarianism, “he added, referring to the US veto against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, which were not invited to the summit.

Quito was not invited to attend the US summit in Los Angeles, but National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the United States would still recognize him as Venezuela’s interim president.
