Long lines are kept in place and the wait can be up to 16 hours.

Thousands of people braved a chilly London night to see Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin, as authorities warned on Saturday that mourners could face up to 16-hour waits.

Meanwhile, police detained a man carrying the Queen’s coffin, her Royal Standard and a diamond-encrusted tiara on Friday night after what they said was a “riot” in Parliament’s Westminster Hall on Friday night.

Parliament officials said someone stepped out of line and tried to approach the coffin on its platform. The Metropolitan Police said one person was arrested for suspected disorderly conduct.

The tide of people wishing to bid farewell to the Queen has steadily increased since the public was allowed into the room on Wednesday. On Friday, authorities temporarily stopped allowing more spectators to join the end of the queue around Southwark Park, about 5 miles from Parliament.

Overnight, volunteers handed out blankets and cups of tea to people queuing as temperatures dropped to 6 degrees Celsius (43 degrees Fahrenheit). Despite the weather, mourners described the warmth of the shared experience.

“It was a cold night, but we had amazing companions and we met new friends. The camaraderie was fantastic,” says Chris Harman from London.

“It was worth it. I would do it again and again. I would walk to the ends of the earth for my queen.”

People had many reasons for coming, from affection for the Queen to wanting to be a part of a historic moment.

Simon Hopkins, who traveled from his home in central England, likened it to “a pilgrimage”.

“It’s a little bit different because it’s against my personality,” he said. “I was a little bit fascinated by it,” he said.

While the Queen’s four children – King Charles III, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward – held a 15-minute vigil around the flag-draped coffin, members of the public continued quietly in Westminster Hall.

Only the cry of a child was heard.

Ahead of the vigil, Eduardo said the Royal Family was “overwhelmed by the waves of emotion that have engulfed us and by the number of people who have gone out to express their own love, admiration and respect”. Mother.”
