They arrest the “Coyotes” after abandoning Venezuela in Darien

The Darien District Attorney’s Office said both citizens were charged with a preliminary injunction.

Two “coyotes” or human smugglers were arrested and detained for migrant smuggling after abandoning four Venezuelans in Darien, the dangerous border with Colombia, the Public Ministry reported this Sunday (MP / Prosecutor’s Office).

The Darien District Attorney’s Office said the two citizens were placed under a precautionary measure of temporary detention after the arrest was legalized, without giving further details about the perpetrators.

The incident occurred between June 26 and 27, when Venezuelan migrants reported being abandoned by coyotes while trying to cross the Darien forest between one part of the Guna Yala region in the Panamanian Caribbean and another in the Embera region. Both are near the border with Colombia.

The prosecutor’s office explained that when the emigrants crossed the forest and the new entrance for passers-by and arrived in Canaan Mempirilo, one of the first towns, they recognized the defendants by their clothing and physical appearance.

The Darién plug, a hospitable forest, is used by thousands of migrants from all over the world on their way to North America each year. Due to the natural nature of the forest and the presence of armed groups, it is considered one of the most dangerous routes in the world.

This year, more than 46,000 irregular migrants have crossed the Darien, most of them Haitians and Venezuelans, heading to the United States or Canada in search of better living conditions, amid an increase in regional migration flows, according to official data.
