President Xi Jinping called on China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to strengthen its readiness for real war amid rising tensions over Taiwan.

While inspecting the Naval Office of the Southern Theater Command located in Canton Province, the President pointed out the need to “strengthen combat-oriented military exercises”.

In this sense, he stressed that he should “adhere to war-oriented training, deepen research on war and operational issues, and innovate the concepts and operational methods of war and training.”

Similarly, the Asian Head of State stressed the importance of being prepared to protect the country’s sovereignty, maritime rights and interests, and maintain regional peace and stability.

The comments by the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee came after three days of large-scale military exercises that simulated an air and naval blockade of the island of Taiwan.

Xi said the military should analyze and solve military problems from a political perspective, conduct military battles firmly and flexibly, and strengthen its ability to ensure timely and appropriate responses to complex situations.

He told the military to resolutely uphold China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and strive to maintain the overall stability of the country’s neighboring regions.

Similarly, the military maneuvers were in response to a meeting between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and Speaker of the United States House of Representatives (US) Kevin McCarthy.
