Legendary actor Steve Martin revealed Wednesday that he may retire after he finishes filming his show Only Murder in the Building.
Martin said The Hollywood Reporter He will continue to star in the mystery comedy Hulu alongside Selena Gomez and Martin Short, but will “not look” for other acting roles once the series is over.
“When this TV show ends, I won’t look for others,” said the 76-year-old. “I’m not going to look for other movies. I don’t want to do the cameo. That’s, oddly enough,.”
Starting his career as a comic writer, Martin appeared in many famous films such as “Father of the Bride”, “Cheaper Than a Dozen”, “Planes, Trains, Cars” and many more.
Martin has also appeared on several TV shows such as The Tonight Show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and Saturday Night Live which he hosted 15 times.
“Talent is amazing and amazing when you first come across it, but it has to improve and have a standard to live by,” said SNL creator Lorne Michaels, a very close friend of Martin. “Don’t worry when Steve is up to something. He won’t be happy until he breaks it. And even then, he won’t trust her.”
On top of his highly successful show – i.e It received 17 Emmy Award nominations Martin is set to publish his twelfth book and is the subject of an upcoming documentary about his life with Academy Award winner Morgan Neville on Apple TV+.
Alongside these projects, Martin and his “Murder” partner Martin Short, 72, have been touring their comedy special, “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!”
“I think Steve learned the fun of collaborating,” Short said of his co-star. “All his life, he’s been on his own. Now, when he’s successful, he can party with someone. And when something breaks, he can really laugh at it—as opposed to being alone with him.”
“There may be a natural end to it – someone gets sick, someone gets sick – but I wouldn’t do it without Marty,” Martin said of their show.
Despite the boom in his career and “Only Murders in the Building” currently airing on Hulu, Martin knows there may be a point where things might slow down, especially as he’s raising a 9-year-old daughter with wife Anne Stringfield.
“I have a really interesting family life,” Martin said. “To shoot a movie now, to go somewhere else to live, I’m not ready to do that anymore. I can’t disappear for three months.
He added, “My wife is constantly saying, ‘You always say you’re going to retire and then you always come up with something.'” I’m really not interested in retiring. I’m not. But I will work a little less. Can.”
