North Korea fired more than ten short-range ballistic missiles this Wednesday (02.11.2022), prompting an unusual airstrike alert on the South Korean island, Seoul officials said, and then responded to the attack.

“North Korea fired three short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea,” also known as the Sea of Japan, the South Korean military, which is conducting military exercises with the United States this week, said.

After detecting the missiles, officials issued an air raid alert on Ulleungdo (East) Island and asked its residents to “evacuate to the nearest underground shelter,” the Joint Staff said.

A missile landed in international waters south of the Northern Limit Line, a disputed maritime border between the two countries, the military said.

“The launch of a North Korean missile is highly unusual and unacceptable, as it is the first time it has landed near South Korea’s maritime border along the northern demarcation line,” Joint Chiefs of Staff Director Kang Shin-king told reporters.

Hours later, the South Korean military fired three air-to-surface precision missiles into North Korean waters in response to North Korean missiles.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) described in a statement that the F-15 and F-16 fighter jets fired these precision missiles “into the open sea north of the LLN (the Northern Limit Line, which separates the waters of the two countries) in response to North Korea’s “provocation.” , it was the first time that missiles from Seoul had landed in a neighboring country’s waters.

“Storm Watcher”

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol called a meeting of his National Security Council to discuss the shooting, which analysts said was the most “aggressive and threatening” in years.

A senior North Korean official, Park Jong Son, called the exercises aggressive and provocative, according to a report in state media on Wednesday.

The nuclear-capable reclusive communist nation has conducted a series of weapons tests this year and is preparing a new nuclear test, its first since 2017, according to Seoul and Washington.
