Poland says the missile that landed on its territory was Russian

NATO called an emergency meeting on Wednesday.

A Russian-made missile landed in the eastern part of the country, killing two people, the Polish Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau called the Russian ambassador and “immediately demanded detailed explanations,” the agency said.

The reports came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the missile attack a “significant escalation” in his country’s war with Russia.

“At 15:40 local time (local time) in the town of Przewodów in Hrubieszów, (…) a Russian-made missile fell, killing two citizens of the Republic of Poland,” said a ministry spokesman, Lukasz Jasina. Report..

The report did not specify what type of missile it was or where it was launched from.

Minutes later, Polish President Andrzej Duda clarified in a speech that it was not known who fired the missile that caused the explosion, although he insisted it was “probably made in Russia.”

“We are working quietly and in a very peaceful way,” Duda said during a National Security Office address in Warsaw, urging calm and assuring the country of support from NATO allies.

Duda added that the United States would send experts to examine the scene of the incident and that the investigations would be a joint operation.

The president reiterated that Poland has raised its military’s alert level.

Hours earlier, Polish media reported shelling a farm on the territory of NATO member Poland, while Russia has launched missile strikes on Ukrainian cities for more than a month.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will chair an emergency meeting of alliance diplomats in Brussels on Wednesday morning to discuss “this tragic incident,” spokeswoman Ona Lungescu told CNN on Tuesday.

“There was an explosion in eastern Poland,” government spokesman Piotr Muller said during a brief press conference in Warsaw. He said there were teams of experts clarifying the situation and would work through the night to clarify the details of what he described as a “serious situation”.

He also noted that the country is increasing the combat readiness of some units.
