NYC subway crime: Strabangers flee a train after passengers used pepper spray in a fight at Union Square

Union Square, Manhattan (WABC) – Train service resumed after pepper spray was used during a subway car fight at Union Square Station.

The accident was reported on Friday morning at around 10 a.m.

Police say the accident prompted passengers to try to flee the train and station.

Police say a 77-year-old man was sitting on the southbound R train when he was pepper-sprayed during an unprovoked attack.

Then the suspect, a man, fled the police station.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he is expected to live.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

MTA spokesperson Michael Cortez released the following statement:

“After a brief suspension of service on lines serving Union Square due to the response of the FDNY and NYPD at that station, regular service has resumed. The cause of the accident that led to this response appears to be isolated.”
