A drug gang has shot and killed 20 people, including a mayor and his father, in the mountains of southern Mexico, authorities said Thursday.

People who identified themselves as the Los Tequileros gang claimed responsibility for the massacre in Guerrero state in a video posted on social media.

Guerrero’s security council said gunmen opened fire inside the municipality of San Miguel Totolaban on Wednesday at a meeting the mayor was holding with various officials.

Among the victims were Mayor Conrado Mendoza and his father, former Mayor Juan Mendoza Acosta. The other victims are believed to be local officials.

The walls of the city hall, surrounded by a children’s amusement park at the time, were riddled with bullets. Totolapan is a mountain town that covers a large area, but is sparsely populated in one of the country’s most violent regions known as Tierra Caliente.

Ricardo Mejia, Mexico’s undersecretary for public security, said the Los Tequileros were fighting the Familia Michoacana cartel and that the authenticity of the video was being verified.

“This event takes place in the context of a criminal dispute between criminal groups,” Mejia said. “In that regionIon ruled over a group known as Los Tequileros One group is essentially devoted to the conversion and commercialization of poppy, but also to smuggling, extortion, and various murders and disappearances in the region.

Dodolaban was controlled for many years by drug lord Rabel Jacobo de Almonde.

In his only known public appearance, Alamante appeared in a 2015 video drinking with mayor-elect Mendoza Sr. It is not clear whether Mendoza was there of his own free will or by force.

In the video, Alamonde was so drunk he couldn’t understand what he was talking about, and one of his assistants held him up to keep him from falling from his chair.

In 2016, residents of Dodolaban, fed up with Tequiliros kidnappings, kidnapped the gang leader’s mother to force them to release the hostages.
