At least 650 people have died trying to cross the US-Mexico border this year, more than in any other year since an international organization began documenting deaths in 2014.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the agency that documents deaths, did not specify the cause of death, but crossing the southern border of the United States was often a dangerous journey that led to many deaths and rescues over the years. .

“The growing number of migrant deaths in the region is alarming,” said Michele Klein Solomon, IOM’s regional director for North and Central America and the Caribbean.

This year the fear of immigrants on the South American border was high, even in the months when numbers were declining. This means thousands of people have been subjected to even more difficult components.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has previously stated that most migrant deaths along the border are associated with heat exposure.

The agency recorded 557 deaths along the southwest border in fiscal 2021. This is an increase from 254 deaths in FY20 and 300 deaths in 2019, indicating a significant increase among 30-year border crossings.
