Mexico: French couple found buried in hostel courtyard

Two lifeless bodies have been found buried in the courtyard of a hotel in Valladolid, Yucatán, Mexico.

Although authorities will need to carry out DNA tests to determine their identity, it is almost certain that they are Michel Amato and Asya Madjour, the French couple who owned the company where the bodies were found and were reported missing in September.

The Sudouest newspaper reported that the Yucatán State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed the discovery late last week.

Amato, 57, and Asya, 50, have lived in Yucatan province for years and own the La Catrina Inn in the La Candelaria neighborhood, which they bought from a Dutch citizen, according to the press.

“Confounding Hypotheses”

The families of Amato and Madjor have not heard from them since August, when they filed a complaint in the middle of last month. For its part, on October 5, the French embassy in Mexico confirmed the disappearance.

Hypotheses about when and where the couple disappeared created a lot of confusion, and the idea that they went to Chiapas to visit a spiritual center was considered, a seriousness that the family rejected.

“We think they never went to Chiapas, the problem is in the Yucatan,” said Asya’s sister Navel Madjor.

The Diario de Yucatán newspaper asserts that there are already at least six cases of foreigners “disappearing or murdered” in the Yucatán Peninsula in 2022.
