Japan confirms purchase of new JASSM-ER cruise missiles from US for Air Defense Force’s F-15J fighter jets.

In one of his recent decisions, The Ministry of Defense has confirmed that it will go ahead with the procurement of new JASSM-ER cruise missiles to equip the Air Defense Force’s F-15J fighter jets.. The decision to acquire the JASSM-ER was announced in late August 2023, with the Department of State authorizing the sale of a total of fifty (50) cruise missiles for a total of US$104 million. Lockheed Martin Corporation.

In recent years, in response to rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, the Japanese government has been promoting the integration of various long-range attack capabilities, such as the Japanese Archipelago Surveillance and Monitoring System. This goes hand in hand with an increase in the presence and activity of ships and aircraft of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and, secondly, the Russian Navy and Aerospace Forces in locations around Japan.

As for the AGM-158 JASSM-ER, it is an American-made extended-range cruise missile. It has a range of 1,000 kilometers and is currently used by the United States Air Force (USAF) and Australia. This weapon has a penetration/explosive fragmentation warhead and is in use on B-1B, B-2, B-52 bombers and F-16 and F-15E fighter jets. More recently, it has also been integrated into launches from F-35 stealth fighters.

According to various local Japanese media, in addition to new weapons for the Air Defense Force’s F-15J, the Defense Ministry plans to make similar additions to bolster its F-35A stealth fighters. The F-2 fighter jet is in service. Among these we can list the JSM-Anti-Ship Missile, an aircraft-launched version based on the NSM jointly developed by Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace and Raytheon Missiles & Defense.
