iPhone 14 Pro hands-on: New colors, dynamic island in action, and more [Videos]

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max Now official, it comes with a lot of new features. Two of the biggest upgrades are the redesigned notch, which Apple now refers to as “Dynamic Island,” and the new always-on display. Head below to take a look at the new iPhone 14 Pro in action.

September 8, 2022: Updated with more videos.

iPhone 14 Pro new colors

The new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be available in four colors, two of which we’ve seen before and two completely new: gold, silver, dark purple, and space black. The first images we see from the hands-on area at the Steve Jobs Theater bring the new colors to life and also show some improvements to the silver.

The new black is not very dark on the back, but is noticeably darker than the graphite color. Where it really stands out is the stainless steel bezels, which are pure black similar to the old Apple Watch in black. The new bold purple design looks really nice with its glossy finish around the stainless steel edges and a more subdued purple color on the back.

The gold color of the iPhone 14 Pro looks unchanged from its previous version, but TechCrunch’s Matthew Panzarino says Silver color looks much better. In previous versions, the white/silver color looked muted and opaque, but this year it looks much closer to bright white.

Here are some pictures of the new white color as well as what the black color looks like compared to the iPhone 13 Pro graphite, Courtesy of Panzarino.

Permanent view and dynamic island

Outside of the new colors, other major changes to the iPhone 14 Pro’s physical appearance are the new Dynamic Island and Always-On display.

The dynamic island is what Apple calls an alternative to the notch. As rumored, the company is working to bridge the gap between the two separate offerings. The big surprise here is that the area between the gap is quite interactive and dynamic as well. It contains contextual information based on the application you are using or data directly from other applications.

For example, Dynamic Island can show artwork of the music you’re currently playing. It also integrates with the Clock app for things like stopwatches and timers. There is integration with Apple Maps for navigation information, live activities support for real-time notifications, and much more.

The Always-On display works just as we’ve come to expect. It shows a dimmed version of your iPhone’s lock screen with things like widgets and visible time. It can also display a faded version of your wallpaper.
