Bing search took a huge leap forward in popularity and gained new chatting capabilities when Microsoft added OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology with the new ChatGPT-based Bing Chat tab. now. Another mode of operation is available with Bing Image Creator, which converts your written description into an image.
According to Microsoft blog postBing Image Creator uses a more advanced version of OpenAI’s Dall-E. This means that it can produce high-quality, realistic digital photos, graphics, and paintings for you based on the text prompts you provide.
How to access Bing Image Creator
There are two ways to use Bing Image Creator. The simplest is to go to bing.com/create, which displays the Image Creator in a live preview in your browser. This is for everyone, and it’s a good place to try it out, even on mobile.
However, the full version of it can be found within the Bing Chat Copilot in the new Edge web browser. Microsoft is taking a phased approach to the rollout, though only about 20% of users have access to it at this point. It’s also only available in Creative mode for now, though Balancedandr Precise modes are currently in the works.
If you can use Bing Chat, try different devices and Microsoft mobile apps. You can get it in one place and not in the other. For example, Bing Image Creator is available on my computer, but not on my phone.
How to start
Let’s start with what you can do with Bing Image Creator in bing.com/create. Once you’re on this page, you’ll see a preview of Image Creator in full page view and a prompt box at the top.
It can be simple, or it can be incredibly in-depth and descriptive. Microsoft says you can start your Bing Chat prompt with “draw a picture” or “create a picture,” followed by a few words describing what you want to see. Either way, in about 15 seconds or so, Image Creator will produce four images.
Click on any of the large thumbnails to enlarge what you want to look at. The image is very usable with a size of 1024 x 1024 pixels.
From viewing the full-size image, you can share a link, save it to a collection, or download the image to your computer. There’s also a feedback button, and Microsoft would very likely appreciate any suggestions or feedback about image quality or suitability.
To start, you get 25 batches, displayed to the right of the prompt box, and each generation of four images uses one batch. You can still use Bing Image Creator without the boosts, but it will take longer to create the images.
Other things you can do here include viewing recent quick results or clicking on the Explore Ideas tab, which will give you some technical examples and FAQs to get started.
If you’re one of the lucky few who has access to Bing Image Creator through Edge Copilot, you’ll be able to do a lot more. You won’t know one way or the other until you give it a shot by asking Bing Chat to draw or create a picture of you. If you don’t have access, Bing will tell you that it can’t draw images and will instead give you a detailed description of what you requested.
Either way, be sure to click Creative mode out of the three options, because Image Creator doesn’t quite get to the Balanced or Fine modes yet.
The powerful thing about using the Image Creator in Bing Chat is the ability to modify or “edit” images. If you want to change the color of something or add/remove certain elements from an image produced by Bing, it’s as easy as just telling it to do so. Everything flows naturally through chat, unlike having to give prompts in something like Stable Diffusion.
As you can see in the example from the tweet, Bing Chat will contextually know how to augment the image based on previous prompts. This is also something you cannot currently do in the version available at bing.com.
When your router is not working
Bing Image Creator is based on Dall-E and has similar strengths and weaknesses. There is a good chance that an interesting, possibly beautiful image will be produced from your prompt.
Other times, the result will be disappointing. Distorted features, fused limbs, and the wrong number of fingers are likely to appear in the images generated.
Rapid engineering is possible, but technology is moving so quickly that it may not be worth spending hours learning specific prompts. Simply ask what you want and be more descriptive of the most important part of the scene the best.
Use photography terms if you want a photo that looks like a photo. Mentioning bokeh, sharp focus, and even your camera brand and lens type may help.
Use stylistic terms such as impressionism, art nouveau, or cubism for your paintings or drawings. You can name the artists, but that’s a morally gray area. If you identify an artist, you are effectively replacing that human with a machine, and potentially infringing their copyright. The legality of creating the image is still being examined.
If you have genitourinary finger problems, try adding a semicolon and ask for normal, proportional, undistorted fingers. the Artificial intelligence can usually understand your words, but it lacks sufficient knowledge of reality. You can direct as you would an artist, but you still need to make points that might seem obvious to the person.
Bing Chat and Bing Image Creator are integrated together
The easiest way to create a good image claim is to use Bing Chat. Have him write a prompt for an image or graphic, then copy and paste it into Bing Image Creator.
The result is often better than what you’ll get from the shorter, simpler description you could come up with on your own. You can also use the Bing Chat prompt as the basis for your own, more personalized version, changing details that don’t match your vision of the image you want.
Bing Chat may give you very long prompts. The beginning of the prompt usually contains the most relevant information, so it may work even if the end is trimmed.
In some cases, the generated prompt will not work. I asked for a drawing of a pirate, and Bing Chat provided a description that included a skull and crossbones. This classic pirate flag bears the emblem known as the Jolly Roger.
When Bing Image Creator dismissed the claim as inappropriate, I simply asked Bing Chat to rewrite it in a way that doesn’t cause a content warning. This claim worked.
Where to use Bing Image Creator images
Like all AI-powered image and text creation software, Bing Image Creator is a powerful tool that can change the way you research, learn, write, and illustrate literal and visual ideas. The tool is not a content creator, and artificial intelligence takes its inspiration from the work of human brains.
When using Bing Image Creator, remember the people behind the Bing Image Creator. Photographers and artists have helped make this possible, and it is critical that we continue to support this creative spirit, even if you use AI image generators.
Just as you might use images as reference material and art for inspiration, the results of Bing Image Creator can help you break through a difficult creative roadblock. The AI will give you something interesting, even if it’s not usable. This starting point may be enough to start your own creation.
