Fantasy Football Week 2 Waiver Wire: Jeff Wilson and Carson Wentz among solutions as injury reinforcements

Fantasy Football Week 2 Waiver Wire: Jeff Wilson and Carson Wentz among solutions as injury reinforcements
USATSI

I’m excited to see what the list trends will look like on Wednesday and Thursday after all of the exemption wire moves this week. It will be interesting to see who has been added and how much each FAB player has gone into in their tournaments.

We’ve got some big injuries to contend with in Week Two with Dak Prescott (thumb), Elijah Mitchell (knee), Nagy Harris (foot), Chris Goodwin (hamstring), Keenan Allen (hamstring), and T. Higgins (concussion). This should force the directors of Fantasy to be active in the waiver wire, which is always fun.

You can see all of my recommendations below, including streaming options in DST and Kicker. We’ll give you players to drop as well, but hopefully the guys you add this week will turn out to be squad makers for your Fantasy roster.

Editor’s Note: For this exemption wire column, we’re only looking at players on the bottom 65 percent of CBS sports leagues.

Second week concessions

  • Injuries: Dak Prescott (thumb), Mac Jones (back) and Zach Wilson (knee).
  • Check to see if it’s available: Matt Ryan (75 percent listed), James Winston (73 percent) and Justin Fields (67 percent). Ryan didn’t have his best game of the first week against Houston by two runs, but he passed for 352 yards and ran down and surprisingly ran for 12 yards. It should come in handy in week 2 in Jaguars as a streamer. …Winston looked bad to start the game against the Hawks, but he rallied the Saints for the win and finished with 269 pass yards and two touchdowns. He should be the No. 1 quarterback to add to Week 2 against Tampa Bay. … Fields struggled in the first week against the 49ers in the rain, passing for just 121 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, along with a 28 rushing yard. But I’m still expecting a better Fantasy production lead, the powerful No. 2 quarterback to burrow into all the leagues.
  • Drop candidates: Prescott (99 percent listed). I prefer Prescott’s hide in all formats, but Fantasy managers in 10-team leagues may not have this luxury with a shallow seat. He’s out until week 10 likely due to his thumb injury, and if you have to drop him to replace him, that might be something you need to do.

turn their backs

  • Injuries: Elijah Mitchell (knee), Nagy Harris (foot), Alvin Kamara (ribs), JK Dobbins (knee), Ken Walker (belly), Brian Robinson (knee), Damien Williams (ribs), Keren Williams (ankle) and Brandon Bolden (hamstrings).
  • Check to see if it’s available: Michael Carter (77 percent listed), Alexander Mattison (76 percent), Kenneth Jenwell (75 percent) and Isaiah Pacheco (70 percent). Carter, as expected, was the lead in the first week’s Jets race against Baltimore with 10 carriers for 60 yards, and added seven catches for 40 yards on nine targets. Breece Hall may eventually take over as Carter, but Carter is the Jetsman at the moment and could be used as a candidate in Week Two against Cleveland. …Mattison is just a leash on Dalvin Cook’s hands, but it should be hidden in all tournaments if you have a place on the list to spare. …Gainwell did well as the Eagles’ second race in week one in Detroit with five loads of 20 yards and a touchdown, and he also added two 12-yard catch stops on four goals. It could be a potential flexible option in PPR going forward, including Week 2 against the Vikings. … Pacheco did the most damage in the first week against the Cardinals in litter time (12 holder for 62 yards and downs), but he is probably the No. 2 running behind Clyde Edwards Heller. Jerick McKinnon (17 percent) will also play a role in this backfield, and deserves to be credited for his deeper PPR tournaments. But Pacheco, like Matteson, could be the league winner if he gets the chance to start anytime this year.
  • Drop candidates: Mitchell (100 percent listed), Daryl Williams (60 percent) and Isaiah Spiler (26 percent). If you can’t hide Mitchell, he may have to dispense with him, especially in the 10-team leagues where there must be a lot of choice in the waiver wire. Mitchell is expected to miss at least eight weeks with an MCL sprain. …Williams is third on the depth chart for the Cardinals and was clearly behind James Conner and Eno Benjamin in the first week. Williams did not play in the first week against the Chiefs and does not deserve a place on the roster in most tournaments. … Spiller had a healthy scratch in the first week of the chargers, and that may continue into the near future. He just deserves to hide in the leagues.

broad receptors

  • Injuries: T Higgins (concussion), Kenan Allen (hamstring), Chris Goodwin (hamstring), Allen Lazard (ankle), Michael Gallup (knee), Rondell Moore (hamstring), Wan Dale Robinson (knee) and Van Jefferson (knee) knee).
  • Check to see if it’s available: Marquis Valdes-Scantling (68 percent listed) and Julio Jones (66 percent). Valdes-Scantling made his soft debut with the Chiefs in the first week with just four for 44 yards on four goals, but he played the most shots and ran the most tracks of any receiver in Kansas City, according to Pro Football Focus. He has great days ahead. …Jones had made his Tampa Bay debut, presumably to benefit with Goodwin out for a few weeks. Against Dallas in the first week, Jones had three catches for 69 yards on five goals, including a 48-yard reception, and added two catches for 17 yards. Russell Gage (44 percent) also deserves a look into deeper leagues.
  • Drop candidates: Tyler Lockett (89 percent listed), Devante Parker (70 percent), Marvin Jones (64 percent), Kenny Golladay (37 percent) and Jalen Tolbert (31 percent). Seattle upset Denver in the first week, but Lockett didn’t do much to help with just three goals for 28 yards on four goals. I’m afraid these baselines will become the norm, and Luckett is not someone you should hide in your 10-team leagues. … The Patriots’ attack looked bad against Miami and struggled throughout pre-season, and Parker now has to deal with Mac Jones to deal with a potential back injury. Parker had one 9-yard catch on two goals and isn’t worth hiding in most 10- and 12-team leagues. …the Jaguar receivers pick ranking in first week in Washington was Christian Kirk, Z. Jones and then Marvin Jones, and I’m not sure the No. 3 receiver on this offense deserves to make the lists in most 10 and 12 leagues. Kirk (12 goals) and Zay Jones (nine goals) each scored at least 12 PPR points, while Marvin Jones had four catches for 38 yards on six. …Golladay’s pre-season struggles were carried over to Week 1 at Tennessee where he only had two hitters for 22 yards on two goals in a game where Robinson was injured and Toni Cadarius (without goals) wasn’t involved. There’s no good reason to hide Golladay now. …It was disappointing that Tolbert was a healthy scratcher in the first week, and now Dak Prescott (thumb) is out until at least week eight. With Gallup’s return looming, it’s time to drop Tolbert in the most seasonal tournaments.

  • Notable injuries: George Keitel (thigh)
  • Drop candidates: Mike Jesicki (80 percent listed), Hunter Henry (59 percent) and Irv Smith (52 percent). Gesicki seems destined to frustrate the Fantasy managers this season and doesn’t deserve to start in any leagues. …I’m not sure you can trust any of the New England passers, and now McJones has a bad back. It can be ugly for Henry going forward. …Smith should get better after going without only catching two goals against the Packers in week one, and he missed most of training camp with a thumb injury. But it’s not worth holding on to him now until he proves to be a bigger part of the Minnesota offensive.
