Candidates to succeed Liz Truss as leader of the Conservative Party have until 2:00pm on Monday 24 October to file their nominations, after the incumbent prime minister tendered her resignation due to low support. Shop politics, but also because of the chaos unleashed by his economic plans. According to reports known this Friday (10.21.2022), the names of Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak are in good shape.

Many “Tory” MPs have called for Johnson’s recall, precisely six weeks ago when Truss replaced him, believing he alone has the mandate from voters to take over the government despite being forced to resign. A number of members of its administration resigned in July because of Downing Street party scandals during the pandemic.

Sunak is another favourite, after she came second – behind the dress – in an internship held over the summer. For many MPs, the former head of the economy is the best politician to deal with the crisis caused by rising energy prices and turmoil in markets, the latter caused by Truss’s controversial economic plan. Sunak, in fact, predicted that such a financial plan would have disastrous consequences.

Consensus name?

The campaign to elect Trudeau’s successor begins on the same day. Those wishing to run for the Conservative leadership, and therefore for the post of Prime Minister, must have the support of at least 100 of the 357 “Tory” MPs established by the 1922 group, which unites the Conservative MPs they do. No ministerial posts.

Another name buzzing around is Benny Mordant, leader of the Conservatives in the House of Commons, who came third in the summer election. His image inspires support as a unifying image. If a consensus-building name does not emerge and two candidates remain in this inner-conservative parliamentary group, members of the organization will have the last word in an online poll.
