A gunman opened fire in a busy shopping center in the Danish capital on Sunday, killing three people and injuring three others, police said.

A 22-year-old Dane was arrested, and Copenhagen police inspector Søren Thomassen said there was no indication that anyone else was involved in the attack, although authorities were still investigating. Thomassen said the three victims were a man in his early 40s and “two young men.”

Such shootings are rare in Denmark. Thomassen said it was too early to speculate on a motive for the afternoon shooting at Fields, one of Scandinavia’s largest shopping malls on the outskirts of the Danish capital. On hearing the gunshots, some hid inside shops while others fled in a horrified stampede.

“It’s absolute terror. It’s horrible,” said Hans Christian Stoltz, a 53-year-old IT consultant who took his daughters to see a Harry Styles concert, which was scheduled to take place near the mall Sunday night. “One wonders how it is possible for one person to do this to another human being. , but this is beyond anything possible.”

Thomasen said the suspect was an “ethnic Dane,” a term commonly used to refer to a white person.

Danish television channel TV2 released a low-quality photo of the alleged attacker wearing knee-length shorts, a T-shirt and holding a gun in his right hand.

“Horrifying reports of firing in Fields. “We are not yet sure how many people were injured or killed, but it is very serious,” Copenhagen Mayor Sophie H. Andersen tweeted.

Footage from the scene of the shooting showed people running out of the mall, and TV2 released a photo of a man on a stretcher. After the shooting, a large contingent of heavily armed police patrolled the area and several fire engines were also in the parking lot.

Lauritz Hermansson told Danish broadcaster DR that he was with his family in a clothes shop in the mall, “I heard three or four shots. Very strong explosions. It was like shooting near the store.

The shopping center is located on the outskirts of Copenhagen, a short distance from a metro station on the route connecting the city center to the international airport. A major highway passes near the mall.

Styles’ concert at the nearby Royal Arena has been cancelled, a Danish newspaper reported.

“My team and I are praying for everyone involved in the Copenhagen shopping center shooting. I was shocked. Love H.” Styles wrote on Snapchat.
