(CNN) An air cargo container carrying more than $15 million in gold and other valuables disappeared from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport on Monday, and police are still trying to find out who is behind the high-value theft.
Stephen Duvestein of Peel Regional Police told a news conference Thursday at the airport that the plane was offloaded and the cargo was taken to a holding facility early Monday evening “as per normal procedures.”
He then said, “This high-value container was illegally removed from the detention facility.”
The police did not say whether the security cameras caught the theft, the airline that transported the container, or who owned the container.
“What I can tell you is that the container contained high-value cargo, which did indeed contain gold but was not limited to gold and contained other items of monetary value,” Duefstein said, valuing the contents at around $15 million ($20 million Canadian). dollar).
Police did not speculate as to whether this was an “occupational” job, saying it was too early in the investigation.
“We’re three days in, so our detectives are opening their eyes to all avenues. So we don’t want to err and kind of focus on a specific area, we kind of keep an overview about it, so we’re looking at all angles for how this item could be stolen.” Duifstein said.
The container is described as 5 or 6 square feet.
