Wake Electric Now Uses VantagePoint Lighting Control Solution from Sensus

Wake Electric is using the Vantage Point Lighting Control Solution from Sensus to remotely monitor and control outdoor lighting at their new headquarters in Wake Forest, North Carolina. The company is also using the VantagePoint Solution from Sensus to monitor street and area lighting for customers.

“With VantagePoint, we’re proactive, pinpointing problems before our customers even need to call,” said Don Bowman, manager of engineering at Wake Electric. “We can view all of our lights as well as monitor and address issues all from one stationary location.”

The VantagePoint lighting solution and module fit into standard socket fixtures. The module identifies the type of light (legacy or LED) and adjusts to accommodate capabilities like flashing and dimming. According to Sensus, lighting, public safety and conservation can be addressed with the click of a button. Programmable control options for the lighting module including dimming levels, alarm reporting for maintenance, and lighting performance analytics. The VantagePoint solution allows the use of street and area lights to brighten public spaces or dim lights that are not needed.

VantagePoint can use its onboard metrology chipset to help public service providers manage power outages. Smart street and area lights can provide data on voltage, outages and overall power quality. Wake Electric says that the data can help enhancereliability of the electricity the company provides by bringing power back to customers more quickly. At the same time, the Sensus FlexNet® communication network and lighting software enables users to keep an eye on all those lights remotely. According to Sensus, FlexNet is a long-range, dedicated and secure radio network that serves as a communications highway and requires less infrastructure than competing solutions. The remote monitoring capability allows Wake Electric to save money for maintenance and electricity and conserve energy.

“These lights are a great source of information that will enable us to better monitor our coverage areas and better serve our customers,” said Bowman. “VantagePoint can immediately alert us to an outage in the network and allows us to respond quickly and notify customers that power restoration is underway.”

Wake Electric extended its partnership with Sensus to include smart lighting. Sensus continues to offer its products for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), smart meters, and data analytics. Since 2012, Wake Electric remotely manages their system with FlexNet. FlexNet reportedly improves billing accuracy, system management and customer service. Lighting data is now also carried over the FlexNet communication system.
