Tunnel in Arizona Now Has LED Lighting

The Queen Creek Tunnel on US 60 east of Superior in Arizona now has an (LED) lighting system according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). The new system will make it Arizona’s first tunnel to have LED lighting.

Beginning Monday, October 10 through early Friday, October 14, ADOT will close US 60 between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. each night in both directions. During this time, the ADOT plans to clean the walls and ceiling of the tunnel.

The new lighting system improves the visibility within the tunnel, which was built in 1952. The system features adaptive controls that adjust the lighting level based on ambient light and weather conditions. The LED lighting is also expected to save money on electricity and reduce the need for maintenance.

In 2014, ADOT secured a $1 million federal grant that will help fund the project.
