Rhenac GreenTec AG and the Technical University of Munich Create Moveable Grow Light System Rig for Sports Fields

The Rhenac GreenTec AG and the Technical University of Munich have worked together to develop an innovative lawn grow light lighting system for sports fields. They then constructed the system with help from Osram Opto Semiconductor’s expertise. Osram Opto Semiconductors of Regensburg, Germany provided the proper LEDs for the system which delivers the missing part of the light spectrum, that the field for the football (soccer) matches does not get enough of during winter months.

The field is now using the light at night and during the dark winter months to maximize the lawn growth year-round on heavily used areas and to fill in gaps.

Lawn Care For Sports Fields Not Just About Aesthetics

For professional sports fields, lawn care is not just about aesthetics. The football fields of professional clubs are used daily and accordingly can show wear and reduced growth in specific areas quickly. However, optimal training conditions require the lawns be in top condition at all times, for precise passes, and more importantly reducing the risk of injury.

The solution that Rhenac GreenTec AG and the Technical University of Munich devised with help from Osram Opto Semiconductors is to provide high powered grow lights over the stressed areas of the field at night and during winter months and to close any gaps in the lawn.

System Uses Osram Opto Oslon LEDs

The system that they created uses Osram Opto Semiconductor’s Oslon LEDs mostly in blue and red to promote photosynthesis. Thanks to a unique function for maximizing light intensity, the output of grow lighting solution can be increased up to six times the normal light intensity, with significantly reduced energy consumption overall compared to other grow light technology. This innovative function is particularly practical for heavily used portions of the field such as the goal area.

Currently, the movable lighting system supports the growth of the lawn of 1. FC Köln with the necessary light both in the Franz-Kremer-Stadion and on the training grounds in the RheinEnergieSportpark. Also, this year FC Schalke 04 will be equipped with a first fully automatic solution.
