Luxeon K2 LEDs from Philips Lumileds Win New Product Showcase Award at Lightfair International

Luxeon K2 LEDs, the newest generation of high-power LEDs from Philips Lumileds Lighting Company, won the New Product Showcase Award at Lightfair International 2006 in Las Vegas. Judges consisting of a panel of lighting professionals honored Luxeon K2 in the specialty lamp category in a competition focusing on the most innovative products in the lighting industry.

The Luxeon K2 family earned the award for a series of technology breakthroughs that are paving the way for the development of solid-state luminaires with more useable light, reduced thermal management engineering, simpler manufacturing and lower cost. These capabilities stem from die and packaging advancements that set new industry benchmarks for light output, temperature tolerance and drive current. New industry-leading performance thresholds set by Luxeon K2 include a 140-lumen or higher light output in white, a 185°C maximum junction temperature, a maximum 1500mA drive current, and a JEDEC Level 2a rating for moisture tolerance. These and other features enable development of brighter LED-based lighting products, lower the cost per lumen, reduce the cost of system thermal design, and yield other benefits that promise to expand the market for solid-state lighting applications.

“Luxeon K2 marks a turning point in the use of LEDs in general lighting, and the Lightfair judges clearly recognized that,” said Doug Silkwood, VP Marketing of Philips Lumileds. “With the technology that underlies our newest Luxeon light source, lighting designers and engineers can take full advantage of the longer life, smaller footprint and energy efficiency of LEDs to produce a wide range of new products that will change the way people light their homes, offices and buildings of all kinds.”
