Philips Lumileds Chroma-Q Color Block Provides Stage Backlighting for Event in Cologne, Germany SSLDesign News StaffAugust 31, 2010...At a large corporate event, some of Germany's most popular bands took the stage in Cologne at the Lanxess arena, one of Europe's largest all-purpose venues and host to concerts by an impressive range of international music stars.
Lighting designer Marcus Krömer specified 330 Chroma-Q Color Block 2 LED fixtures to provide stage scenic elements backlighting for the event.
Marcus needed a fixture that was bright enough to uplight a curved wall onstage reaching up to 5m high at its centre. At the same time, it had to be compact enough to fit inside and follow the curvature of the 32m span. The lighting also needed to feature built-in dimming, provide smooth color changing effects, and look good on camera because the whole event was being filmed in high definition.
Marcus used 330 Color Block 2 units mounted at the top and bottom inside the wall to light a bounce at the back of it. The wall was used in two different configurations. During the daytime there was an entrance opening for the daytime conference and awards. Then at night the wall was fully closed off for the evening concert.
Marcus employed soft color static looks for the daytime events, and he switched to bold color looks synchronized with the surrounding video panels and other effects lighting for the concert. Well known German bands Die Höhner, Drum Café and Pur performed at the event. Retail Display Cases Get a Sleek New Look with D-LED Luminaires and Luxeon LEDs SSLDesign News StaffAugust 26, 2010...An Israeli jewelry store, Royalty Jewelry, a 430-square-foot boutique in Tel Aviv’s Ramat Aviv Mall, has incorporated new LED-based under-cabinet and in-cabinet fixtures to transform the store. The new LED-based fixtures measure merely 1/10th the height of comparable non-LED luminaires. The store's new showcases have a sleek, more open appearance with better product lighting. The New fixtures from D-LED Illumination Technologies boast 85 percent less power consumption.
D-LED created the Source Linear System fixtures in collaboration with LED solution specialist Future Lighting Solutions. They have an ultra-slim 49mm wide x 24mm high (1.9” x 0.9”) profile. This slim size stems from the small Luxeon Rebel package combined with D-LED’s no-secondary-optic design. The design of the fixtures shrank the amount of wood trim required to conceal the interior lighting apparatus thereby enabling the open look of Royalty’s new showcases

Comex, an electronics distributor based in Hong Kong, will reportedly provide comprehensive distribution, supply-chain optimization, and technical support to help Luminus’ customers to accelerate product development for a variety of general illumination and specialty lighting applications.
“The Asian market is a cornerstone to our growth strategy,” said Keith T.S. Ward, president and CEO of Luminus Devices, Inc. “Comex’s reputation, reach and experience in Asia as a specialist in LED technology is first-rate and we’re excited to be aligned with them in serving our customers.”
“Our priority is to expand the PhlatLight LED brand in China and Hong Kong through our extensive customer channels of companies adopting solid state lighting solutions,” said Steve Ho, general manager, Comex Technology, Ltd. “As traditional lighting solutions are phased out and energy-efficient, long-lasting PhlatLight LEDs are built into tomorrow’s lighting applications, Comex will help Luminus become the light engine in next-generation LED-based products.” Philips Lumileds Ships 1 Billionth Luxeon LED LIGHTimes News StaffAugust 5, 2010...Philips Lumileds, the LED lighting business of Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands, reports that it has shipped its billionth Luxeon power LED in the second quarter of 2010. Of that total some 750 million Luxeon power LEDs were reportedly delivered to automotive, illumination and consumer electronics customers, in just the past two years.
Philips Lumileds says that its capacity and infrastructure investments over the last several years have enabled it to meet customer needs for high volumes of products. The company contends that a decade of innovation, technology, and lighting leadership has positioned it well to support customers’ development and introduction of new lighting solutions.
“This isn’t just a milestone for the company but for the entire industry,” said Michael Holt, CEO. “When we started, the idea that Lumileds could change the nature of lighting with power LEDs was greeted by many industry insiders with skepticism. Today, they and others have followed us as competitors into an industry that is driving energy efficient lighting applications and new ways of lighting the places where we live, work, and play.”
Even before being acquired by Philips, Lumileds had a clear mission to enable general lighting through the application of power LEDs. The company boasts that prior to Lumileds' invention of the power LED — an LED designed to operate at a current of 350 milliamps or higher — LEDs typically produced only a lumen or two.
Today, Philips Lumileds notes that its Luxeon power LEDs can generate hundreds of lumens and are being used to light everything from LED light engines to streetlights to car headlamps and LCD displays.
