Lumex Introduces New Lumex TitanBrite Wireless Bonded LED LIGHTimes News StaffJune 13, 2013...Lumex of Carol Stream, Illinois has launched its TitanBrite Wireless Bonded LED. Lumex claims that the new LEDs feature “flip chips” that are up to 15% brighter than any others in the market. Luxex says that in addition to the standard 3W and 6W LEDs, its TitanBrite Wireless Bonded LED is also available in 9W versions.
Lumex notes that wireless bonded LED technology, often referred to as “flip chip”, offers several key performance benefits over traditional SMT (Surface Mount Technology) LEDs including enhanced durability, enhanced heat dissipation and superior light performance. Lumex claims that its TitanBrite Wireless Bonded LEDs are the only flip chip LEDs on the market available in both standard and custom colors and shapes. Standard shapes are circular and rectangular. Lumex says it can also design custom shapes such as octagons and triangles in order to fit any application. Standard colors include warm white and cool white and blue is available for custom products.
The RoHS compliant TitanBrite Wireless Bonded LEDs are available in 3W wireless bond light bar modules (cool white and warm white) and 6W wireless bond round modules (cool white and warm white) in addition to custom colors (including blue) and sizes for 3W, 6W and 9W.
Lumex says that because of the absence of a wire bond and a hard epoxy layer, the wireless bonded LEDs are five times stronger and more robustly designed than standard, high power LEDs. Furthermore, Lumex contends the its Wireless Bonded LEDs offer superior heat dissipation and are more adverse to shock and vibration than traditional high power LEDs. Also, Lumex claims that they can withstand higher temperatures without compromising performance and have a greater surface area for heat dissipation, making them more efficient at removing heat. Lumex asserts that due to the placement of junction pads on the bottom of the flip chip, heat can be transported faster than with a regular high power LED, keeping this technology 25% cooler than traditional high power wire bond technologies.
Lumex contends that higher light output is achieved in a more compact space and the light performance is not disrupted by shadows or other obstacles to consistent performance.According to Lumex, the wireless bonded technology enables the chip to directly emit light from the top and the side with no wire bond casting shadows or creating uneven light distribution, providing 15% more light output.

series mid-power ceramic LEDs. Unlike today’s common mid-power plastic
packages, XLamp XH-G and XH-B LEDs have ceramic packages. The use of ceramic
packages means that the LEDs can be driven at higher current and can withstand
higher temperatures. Cree has taken the design approach of using fewer but
somewhat more costly, mid power LEDs, that can be driven at higher currents and
are highly reliable. According to Cree, other LED makers have taken a different
approach in the mid-power realm of using more, but less expensive
(individually) plastic, mid-power LEDs that are less reliable, and cannot be
driven at high currents or withstand such high temperatures. Cree contends that
the ceramic packages enable lighting manufacturers to create more
energy-efficient, longer life LED lighting solutions without sacrificing cost
or performance.
The new XH series of LEDs are optimized for LED-based fluorescent
replacement lighting applications such as troffers and panel lights, which
require high efficacy, long lifetime and smooth appearance. The XH-G LED
delivers efficacy levels of up to 170 lumens-per-watt at 65 mA, 5000K, 80 CRI
and 25°C. In addition, Cree says that the the ceramic-based XH LEDs are
designed to deliver the long L70 lifetimes at high temperature and high current
operation of Cree’s other high-power LEDs, such as XP and XT LEDs. In
comparison, Cree contends that plastic LEDs are known for very short L70
lifetimes at high temperature and high current operation.
“We're excited that Cree is offering high-quality, ceramic-based
mid-power LEDs designed for real world lighting applications,” said
Roger Suen, supply chain management director, Light Engine. “The XH
LED family gives us confidence in providing products that deliver stable lumen
maintenance and good color consistency that cannot be duplicated by plastic
packages.”
“The use of plastic packages for lighting solutions places a high
degree of risk for end-customers and the industry in general,” said
Paul Thieken, Cree director of marketing, LED components. “The XH
LEDs provide peace-of-mind to lighting manufacturers while enabling them to
better differentiate their products in the marketplace.”
The XH-G and XH-B LEDs each have a 3.0mm x 3.0mm footprint package.
According to Cree both The XH-G and the XH-B have a 13 percent wider beam angle
than most plastic mid-power LEDs. Cree® XLamp XH LEDs are offered in 2700K to
7000K color temperatures with high CRI options available. Samples are available
now, and production quantities are available with standard lead times. Cree Introduces Higher Brightness Color LEDs in XP Footprint LiGHTimes News StaffMay 22, 2013...Cree, Inc. of Durham, North Carolina USA, has announced commercial
availability of XLamp® XP-E2 color LEDs. According to Cree, the new XP-E2 color
LEDs deliver up to 88 percent higher maximum light output compared to
alternative high-power color LEDs. Cree says that this higher maximum light
output enables lighting manufacturers to more cost-effectively address a wide
spectrum of applications such as architectural, vehicle and display lighting.
Cree's new XLamp XP-E2 color LEDs are available in red, red-orange, amber,
green, blue and royal blue.
The new XP-E2 color LEDs are built on Cree’s SC³ Technology™ LED
platform, which uses silicon carbide and combines advances in chip design,
packaging, and phosphors, to provide higher lumens-per-watt and
lumens-per-dollar compared to the original XP-E color LEDs. Cree indicated that
switching to XP-E2 LEDs in existing XP-E LED designs, lowers system costs. The
new XP-E2 color LEDs have the same XP footprint (3.45mm x 3.45mm) and are
optically compatible with the original XP-E LED providing what the company
describes as a drop-in-ready performance enhancement to shorten design cycle
and improve customer time to market.
“We are excited that Cree is offering higher performance color
LEDs in the XP footprint,” said Greg Campbell, executive vice
president and chief technology officer, Lumenpulse. “The brighter
XP-E2 color LEDs enable Lumenpulse to continue to provide innovative,
high-performance LED lighting systems.”
The XP-E2 color LEDs have a maximum drive current of 1A and a viewing angle
of 110 to 135 degrees. The royal blue version of the XLamp XP-E2 color LEDs at
maximum drive current delivers up to 1409 mW. Also at maximum drive current,
the XLamp XP-E2 color LEDs provide up to 109 lumens for blue, 253 lumens for
green, 203 lumens for amber, 193 lumens for red-orange and 155 lumens for red.
All have the 3.45mm x 3.45mm footprint. Cree says samples are available now and
production quantities are available with standard lead times. Luminus Devices to Supply Big Chip LEDs for Vision X Lighting’s Long Throw Spot Lighting Applications LIGHTimes News StaffApril 30, 2013...Luminus Devices, Inc. a maker of big chip LEDs and Vision X Lighting
announced a strategic partnership to develop and produce LED technology for
lighting applications that are currently dominated by High Intensity Discharge
(HID) lamp technology. The companies expect that the collaboration between
Luminus, a producer of high brightness LEDs, and Vision X Lighting, a supplier
of aftermarket automotive lighting fixtures, will create a new class of LED
lighting products with the power and punch of HID based systems.
"We assessed many high brightness LED products from manufacturers
throughout the industry, but ultimately decided to partner with Luminus Devices
because their Big Chip products perform at a level that sets them apart,"
said Tony Georgitsis, president of Vision X Lighting. "With a Luminus LED
at the heart of the light fixture, we can deliver useful light at distances
that could only previously be achieved with HID lamps. This is a true
breakthrough in automotive aftermarket lighting, and we are thrilled about the
partnership with Luminus, and the exciting new products we will be releasing in

Duris P 5 mid-power LEDs. Like the white versions, the new color versions are
said to have high luminous efficacy from a compact form factor. The LEDs are
ideal for architecture lighting and for hotels and restaurants.
The five color versions of Duris P 5 are: “deep blue” (450 nm),
“blue” (470 nm), “true green” (528 nm),
“yellow” (590 nm) and “red” (615 to 625 nm). The LEDs
employ LED chip technologies from Osram, based on either the InGaN (Indium
Gallium Nitrite) material system or InGaAlP (Indium Gallium Aluminum Phosphite)
depending on the wavelength.
The company says that low forward voltages and optimized light extraction
result in high luminous efficacies for all of the new LEDs. The “deep
blue” version, for example, delivers a light output of 140 mW (at 100 mA
and 25 ºC), corresponding to a typical efficiency of 48 percent. Efficiency is
defined as the ratio of the amount of light produced to the amount of power
consumed.
As members of the mid-power class, the color versions of Duris P 5 are ideal
for linear, area or omnidirectional lighting applications in which the light
has to be distributed as uniformly as possible. Color mixing is also said to be
much easier in applications involving several colors.
“The color Duris P 5 versions will give our customers even greater
freedom in designing luminaires. A good example is the combination of white and
colored mid-power LEDs within a luminaire,” said Martin Wittmann,
Product Manager Marketing SSL at Osram Opto Semiconductors, and added,
“The use of the Duris power class also reduces system costs while at
the same time improving the distribution of light and simplifying thermal
management.”
Like the white versions in the P 5 family, the package technology of the
colored Duris versions allow them to withstand extremely harsh conditions and
increasing corrosion resistance compared to conventional mid-power LEDs. The
company says that the small component dimensions of only 2.6 by 2.2 mm also
allow good optical control in connection with secondary optics.
Osram Opto Semiconductors points to architectural and signage applications
as uses for the new LEDs. The company also mentions the possibile use of the
Duris color versions in “remote phosphor” applications in which the
converters needed to generate white light are not attached directly to the chip
but are illuminated by “deep blue” LED from a certain distance,
causing them to luminesce. The company says that this remote phosphor
technology results in uniform distribution of light and high luminous
efficacy.
The color Duris P 5 versions debuted at the Osram booth 1001 at Lightfair
