June 15, 2011... OSRAM enhances the entrance to the new “Stachus Passagen” with modern LEDs

For decades, OSRAM's former slogan "Hell wie der lichte Tag" (bright as day) has adorned the facades of the buildings around Munich's Karlsplatz or "Stachus", as it is commonly known. The Munich-based light manufacturer is now making its mark below this bustling circus, too, providing brilliant light at the entrance to the newly designed subterranean station for suburban and underground trains.

The new entrance to the suburban and underground train station at Munich's "Stachus" is illuminated by means of LI-EX sections lit by thousands of LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors.

The renovation of the "Stachus Passagen" arcade has been under way since 2007. As part of the project, the entrance to the suburban and underground train station and the "Stachus Passagen" arcade at Munich's Karlsplatz have been equipped with a modern lighting solution: a total of 65,000 LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors were recessed in the installed sections by LI-EX, light experts from Regensburg. The conceptual lighting design was planned by Munich-based specialists Schmidt-König.

Stylish and economical lighting solution
"We are pleased to have enhanced the new "Stachus Passagen" arcade both optically and architecturally with our LEDs. The light-emitting diodes used have a particularly natural color appearance, creating a pleasant atmosphere. Visitors to Munich's "Stachus" can thus benefit from an efficient lighting solution that combines style with safety," explains Martin Goetzeler, Chief Operating Officer of Osram.

The little diodes have also brightened up the staircase. A total of 50,000 LEDs have been recessed in the 700-meter-long handrail and illuminate the surfaces of the steps. Lamps with a low power consumption were required here, as the stair lights will also provide the emergency lighting, being powered from a battery in the case of a power cut: thanks to the use of LEDs, it only takes 100 Watts to illuminate 18 meters of handrail.
