Philips Color Kinetics Puts an LED Luminaire Electrical Installation Video on Website
SSLDesign News Staff

November 7, 2008...In an effort to reach electricians, Philips Color Kinetics has placed a ten-minute video on its web site which explains how to install LED luminaires. It has only been recently that connecting LEDs to AC current has been made easier. Philips Color Kenetics has taken the added step of explaining the installation of several of its LED luminaires. The video in effect provides much of what an electrician might see at a lighting conference presentation. The demonstration includes using dimmer switches, and various DMX-based computer controllers. The video shows a considerably easier installation than some electricians and even some LED experts might anticipate. While this is among the first companies to have done such a demonstration on web video, it will not likely be the last. You can view the demonstration at: http://test3.electricsmarts.com/philips/tstg/

Lansing Expands Trial of Luxeon-based Street Lighting
SSLDesign News Staff

November 7, 2008...Lansing Expands Trial of Luxeon-based Street Lighting Philips Lumileds of San Jose, California USA, announced that the Lansing, Michigan Board of Water and Light (LBWL), recently expanded its trial of street lamps from Philips Lumileds, which utilize Luxeon Rebel LEDs. The expanded trial includes six new Luxeon-based street lamps with neutral white Luxeon Rebel LEDs. The first 17 were installed in 2007 to explore the possibility of using LED street lights to reduce energy, maintenance, and bulb replacement costs. The LBWL is considering expanding the trial even more to determine if the city's 34,000 high pressure sodium and metal halide street lamps should eventually be replaced with LED models. Midwest Circuits a maker of LED light engines based in Ferndale, Michigan, designed the LED light engines for outdoor lighting applications.

In a recent survey, 85 percent of the respondents said that the new fixtures had a pleasing glow, sufficient brightness, and a safe light pattern. Not surprisingly, the vast majority therefore supported the installation of LED street lamps in other neighborhoods. SSL Design PageTwo members login for more. Guests can view membership details.

In the spirit of the coming season, Christmas Lights Etc. of Alpharetta, Georgia USA, announced three ways that consumers can reduce their holiday decorating costs. SSLDesign News Staff

October 30, 2008...PowerSecure International Inc., an energy management and distribution company based in Wake Forest, North Carolina USA, reported that Walgreens, a U.S. based pharmacy and convenience store chain, will purchase the company's EfficientLights LED lighting technology for the company's refrigerated cases installed in the majority of Walgreens new openings in 2009.

Leave it to grandMa to Light Up the Stage
SSLDesign News Staff

October 24, 2008...Some lighting designers in stage, theater, TV, and movie production have begun using the grandMa. No, that is not the name for an elderly female lighting designer. It is the name for a programmable lighting console available from MA Lighting in South Africa. Tim Dunn, Director and renowned Lighting Designer at Gearhouse South Africa has great respect for both the grandMA console and the team that produced it. “From a lighting desk point of view, the back up and the investment are amazing. It’s actually freaky what the grandMA can do. The console is both powerful and completely stable. One thing I try to share with the guys is that the desk should not restrict you. Don’t think of the technology but decide what you want to do and then do it. I find new things every time I work on the desk.” SSL Design PageTwo members login for more. Report on 2008 IESNA Street and Area Lighting Conference - Part 2
Guest Editorial - Shawn Keeney, LED Transformations, LLC

October 30, 2008...Our guest editorial is the second of a two-part report on IESNA's 2008 annual Street and Area Lighting Conference (SALC), held recently in Denver on October 12th through 15th.

In the first installment of this editorial, we shared an overview of the key talks and networking sessions from Day 1 of the 2008 SALC event. Topics included discussions on ways to meet growing energy demands with managed conservation policies, developments and case studies in outdoor lighting advances, current industry goals, an examination of LED technology progress, and a review of solar-powered outdoor lighting opportunities. At the conclusion of that installment, we noted that this year's conference seemed to mark a distinct step forward in the adoption of SSL in the street lighting industry. Although there was a great deal of talk about LEDs, the general feeling among many was that there is still a long way to go until the technology is ready for widespread adoption.

Tuesday morning's session began with a talk from Govi Rao, CEO of Lighting Science Group, called "When Will LED Lighting Be Everywhere?" Mr. Rao outlined the challenges of LED adoption and conditions needed to sustain it, which include product stewardship, capacity, standards, and metrics. In another LED-related highlight, following a talk on pole attachment regulations, Yaser Abdelsamed, Director of Innovation at Acuity Brands Lighting, gave a presentation called "Applying LEDs in the Real World." This covered some of the basics we have already become familiar with, and then went into some depth on the three P's of lighting: physiology, physics, and psychology (or perception).

The remainder of the presentations on Tuesday covered non-LED topics, so they will not be covered. There were, however, additional networking sessions including one specifically on LED Technology and Applications. While much of the conversation continued on topics involving binning and standards, including RP-8, it was interesting to note that in that presentation, when asked for a show of hands, most people said they were willing to try LED products, although very few of them had actually done so or planned to do so.

The exhibit portion of the conference featured displays from 40 companies involved in various aspects of street lighting from poles and fixtures to controls and light sources. Companies who have already made a name in SSL such as BetaLED, Carmanah, GE Lumination, and Leotek were present, but there were also some more traditional lighting companies showing new LED-based products including Cyclone Lighting, Cooper Lighting Streetworks, North Star Lighting, Eye Lighting International, and Lumec (part of Philips). A new exhibitor called Chips and Wafers, who is representing Neo-Pac, was there for the first time this year.

Another noteworthy display was in the Pemco booth which featured a luminaire using LIFI technology from Luxim, who classifies it as solid state lighting technology. It consists of a small metal-halide bulb not much larger than a breath-mint which is driven by an RF power amplifier. This electrodeless source is supposed to operate up to 30,000 hours while producing 19250 lumens initially at 244 watts (79 lm/W) with a CRI of 95. It can be dimmed down to 20 percent, although the output shifts towards the blue part of the spectrum. This luminaire is still very new and while not yet available, according to the brochure, it is slated for sale starting in 2009.

Summary thought: Why the general feeling that there is still a long way to go until widespread adoption? The main reasons for this appear to be the higher upfront costs and the lack of current ability by the manufacturers to demonstrate that their products will live up to what they have promised. Energy savings alone will not drive sales; maintenance savings are a key factor. Other lighting technologies such as induction and LIFI represent viable alternatives and will continue to merit consideration. There are issues with the current lighting standards that will need to be addressed in order for SSL to be considered for mainstream usage. While there is a great deal of excitement about this new technology, there is also a great deal of healthy skepticism. While there have been a number of high-profile test installations, it will still be a while until we see an LED street light on every corner. It will certainly be interesting to see how things shape up in the coming year.
