July 22, 2010... Cree has obtained business from a country that has been conspicuously absent from most solid state lighting related news, India. Cree reports that the town of Tirupati, India has committed to using Cree LED-based lighting solutions. Tirupati Municipal Corporation in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh has reportedly converted more than 140 street lights to LED-based fixtures on two of the town's busiest roads. Tirupati is home to the Venkateswara Swamy temple. Between 50,000 and 100,000 pilgrims visit the temple each day. It is one of India’s important pilgrimage centers and a major economical and education hub in the southern region of Andhra Pradesh.

Tirupati reportedly selected LED lighting to address escalating infrastructure costs. Avni Energy Solution Pvt. Ltd, a Tirupati-based company, supplied and installed LED street lights along the city’s main thoroughfares.
