August 7, 2008... The first production run of the LEDway street lights from BetaLED rolled off the assembly line on Tuesday, August 5, 2008. The first LEDway street light was given to Al Ruud, Beta Lighting’s president, and the second through the 21st from the production line were shipped to the city of Racine, Wisconsin for installation later during the month at various locations.
The company boasts that LEDway streetlights use 50 to 60 percent less energy than traditional streetlight sources and last more than 100,000 hours. According to the company, this is four times longer than traditional high-pressure sodium lamps.
The company explains that unlike lamps in traditional streetlights, no mercury is contained in the LEDway fixture or used in its production. Additional environmental benefits of LEDway include Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliance, less disposal waste due to the fixtures extended life, and Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) full cutoff classification for optical control.
