July 31, 2008... Many kids and adults have a blue LED night light on while they sleep, in case they wake up to go to the bathroom. Some researchers have found that these lights reek havoc on your sleep cycle. In fact they tend to make people sleep less and wake up sooner. With funding from NASA’s National Space Biomedical Research Institute, researchers at Thomas Jefferson University in Philidelphia led by George Brainard, Ph.D., have found that a light-sensitive layer of the eye that is unrelated to the parts that allow us to see, sends signals to the body that affect rhythms of wakefulness and sleep. According to the recent findings, blue light can apparently trick the mind into thinking it is time to be awake.
