Acuity Debuts Daylighting System with Tunable White Using Skylights

Acuity Brands LightFlex Daylighting System with unique skylights installed in classroom

Acuity Brands, Inc.introduced LightFlex™ LED from Sunoptics®, an integrated, tunable-white LED tubular daylighting system for commercial environments. The LightFlex LED system delivers electric light or allows just the natural light (daylight) from specially designed skylights to light a room.
The system can also combine both daylight light with carefully tuned electric light without sacrificing color uniformity.

According to Acuity Brands, the LightFlex LED system provides uniform color throughout the space and minimizes contrast between the warm-white electric light and cool-white daylight.

Systems Integrates Light from Skylights

The patented Signature Series prismatic skylight captures more low-angle sunlight than competitive skylights. This capturing of more sunlight translates to bringing daylight for more hours and during more days of the year, Acuity contends.

Then, a patented remote phosphor lens enables the color-shifting of cool-white daylight to warm white CCT.

The specially designed skylight called the LightFlex 21″ tubular daylighting device (TDD) includes the prismatic optic sphere located between the skylight and the roof curb which is designed to maximize and drive light deeper into the light well. On its reflective surfaces, the light well uses 98% reflective MIRO-SILVER® with greater than 99% specular quality and 25-year warranty from Alanod®. The rectangular or square, straight light well is available in sizes of 2’x4′ and 4’x4′.

Daylight from Skylights Adjustable with Louvers

Acuity claims that combining lighting and daylight also reduces the footprint of lighting products in the ceiling, making cleaner ceilings and offering more design freedom. The LightFlex LED system also features a louver (a kind of adjustable horizontal blind) that can reduce the amount of daylight from unique skylights for audio-visual mode and for meeting dark-sky requirements.

Also, diffusers in photometric distributions with designs that complement luminaires from Acuity Brands, offer seamless transitions between electric light and daylight sources.

An integrated photosensor works in conjunction with Acuity’s nLight® controls to maintain light levels from electric light. At the same time, the system maximizes occupant access to natural light.

Tunable-white LEDs (2700K-6500K) provide up to 3000 delivered lumens when adequate daylight is not available.
“LightFlex LED addresses the previously unmet need to integrate daylighting with electric lighting in the same daylighting system to optimize the use of daylight while providing uniform color,” said Pete Shannin, Vice President, Daylighting & Life Safety Product Solutions.

“A designer no longer will need to consider how to balance the color consistency between the separate daylight and lighting products; and because the integrated LED lighting is tunable, it gives the user the ability to tailor the lighting environment to support the application need. Our innovative system utilizing tunable-white LED in combination with daylight illustrates Acuity Brands’ forward-thinking application of lighting technology into smart design,” Shannin said.

A 21-inch tubular design can support 2-by-2 foot ceiling configurations. The tubular daylighting system includes adjustable elbows that can bypass interior ceiling obstructions in retrofit applications.
